Kakamega county government without tendering procured, 72 desk phones with sources revealing, a firm associated with a wheeler dealer was favoured.
The phones were single sourced on grounds of enhancing communication and information exchange.
The phones, valued at Sh432,000, are designed to operate with the latest digital communication technology.
At the centre of the tender deal is public service and administration executive, Beatrice Sabana who authorised the purchase. In fact, the cost and the maintenance of the gadgets that have been distributed to all ward and subcounty offices is likely to shoot up to millions. The phones which already those using them claim are substandard and losing network frequently are to help in communicating between the administrators, other government officers as well as members of the public.
Already, the phones that are supposed to operate on a 24/7 basis to enable faster reporting of emergency issues, such as disasters, by members of the public, are not functional.
